12 x 12: Brooklyn Center x Yia Vang
Brooklyn Center Community Center
6301 Shingle Creek Parkway,
Brooklyn Center, 55430
Chef Yia Vang will explore the diverse culture of Brooklyn Center using the medium of food. This cooking demonstration will take place in the Brooklyn Center Community Center in its Constitution Hall. Vang will reflect on what it means to be a refugee and his Hmong family’s experience, as well as the experience of so many immigrant and refugee families living in Brooklyn Center. This event culminates with Vang leading the audience in preparing a new dish for/with the Brooklyn Center community.
A trained chef, Yia Vang worked at many top restaurants in the Twin Cities before starting Union Hmong Kitchen, and has been featured in the New York Times, Nat Geographic, and Bon Appetit, as well as showcased on PBS, CNN, and more. His new restaurant concept, Vinai, which is named after the refugee camp in Thailand where he was born, is to create a home for his Hmong food that celebrates his parents’ legacy and tells his family’s story through food. (Vinai is slated to open in Minneapolis).
