Mixed Blood has been producing theatrical works from the disability canon for 18 years and I have had the privilege of directing all of the autism themed plays. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is preceded by Vestibular Sense (2006), Theory of Mind (2009), On The Spectrum (2011), and Orange (2016). What’s been consistent has been that these plays don’t say the word autism, that we celebrate the advantages and challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorder and not deficits, and that our approach is through a difference, not disorder, lens.
The oft-cited mantra, “Once you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.,” sets the foundation for my direction of each of these plays. Our axiom is “not about us without us.” People on the spectrum are immersed in this production, from the art being projected to the models for the cast to the audience being sought.
I dream for Mixed Blood, this movement, to be a beacon for comfort, compassion, contemplation, and community. Supported by staff, board, artists, neighbors, funders, audience, activists, and more, I hope that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is a giant step in that direction.
