Zealous Hellions

Zealous Hellions is a project of Mixed Blood Theatre to provide our community with real-time, face-to-face conversations between artists, cultural provocateurs, politicians, and thought-leaders in an intimate setting.

Past events featured:

  • Four inimitable artists, Suzy Messerole and Signe Harriday from the gold-medal winning synchronized swim team Subversive Sirens and Sandra Richardson and Deneane Richburg from the genre-defying performing arts company Brownbody, discussed their art and activism; unique methods of development and performance; and making space for folks who have traditionally been denied access to pools and ice skating rinks.
  • Ellie Krug esteemed writer, lawyer, school board member and human Ellie Krug  reflected on the work being done to protect trans kids in schools and on her work changing hearts and policies from within systems of all kinds.
  • Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins, the first African American openly trans woman to be elected to office in the United States. A nationally and internationally recognized performance artist, poet, and transgender activist, Andrea spoke about art, race, politics, gender, and more.

Learn & Do – Miz Martha

A black fist holding a gavel is coming down on a collage image of Martha Washington. She weeps white tears.

Learn & Do

The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Help us disrupt injustice at this community learning and action series.

On Sundays in March at 4pm, we will be joined by a content expert (e.g. historian, community leader, activist) who will teach us something about the history, systems, or activism that affect our society now. We’ll share some food and take action, joining each other in conversation and creation around the topic. You do not need to have attended the play to join a Learn + Do! All are welcome and invited to participate in the Learn + Do Series.

Each event will offer an opportunity to learn from an expert, and an invitation to do something with what we’ve learned.

    • March 10, 4pm – History
    • March 17, 4pm – Systems
    • March 24, 4pm – Activism
    • March 31, 4pm – Action

2023-2024 Season

2023-2024 Season

OUR 47TH SEASON FEATURES THREE INCREDIBLE PRODUCTIONS THAT DISRUPT TRADITIONAL THINKING AND INSPIRE CIVIC DISCOURSE.

“In this, my second season at Mixed Blood, we are enacting our mission to “disrupt injustice” by looking at our systems…cultural, spiritual, political, and economic. After completing the 12×12 series, I better understand some of the conversations happening in the Twin Cities and Minnesota and our season reflects that. I couldn’t be more excited to share this work with you,” Mixed Blood Artistic Director, Mark Valdez.

Mariology, written & directed by Nancy Keystone and created in collaboration with Critical Mass Performance Group, deconstructs deep-seated learning to inspire imagination about the Virgin Mary’s roles in systems of gender, power, and faith, to open possibilities for liberation. October 27 – November 12, 2023
