For 50 years Mixed Blood has been bringing characters and stories to the stage that you couldn’t see elsewhere. In doing so, we centered the people and issues that lived on the margins so that we could, together, find ways towards a more just society.

Mixed Blood employee Katy Vernon took time out from a visit to her UK home to read us all a story. To promote Mixed Blood Theatre's presentation of 'Into The Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale. As the neighborly forest animals gather in the rabbit’s den – under Mr. McGregor’s Garden – for a surprise party for Peter Rabbit, the animals soon realize Mr. McGregor has terrible plans for the land around Peter’s burrow. Featuring beloved characters from the classic Beatrix Potter tales and a variety of original songs, this new musical encourages us to find strength in community and to stand up for what is right. The play is a one-woman adaptation of Euripides’ The Trojan Women, written by Sara Farrington, directed by award-winner Meghan Finn, and featuring international actress Drita Kabashi. The play was further developed at Vassar College’s Powerhouse Theater and Luna Stage in New Jersey and played at the King’s Head Theatre in London. Directed by The Tank’s Artistic Director Meghan Finn and starring Kosovo actress Drita Kabashi, A Trojan Woman brings an ancient story into the heart of today’s headlines. Set in the aftermath of war, a woman and her child find themselves alone in a ruined city, echoing the sorrow and devastation of the women of Troy after the city’s fall to the Greeks in the Trojan War. The play follows her journey as she steps into the voices of ten different characters — each one telling a story of loss and survival. At its core, it’s a mother’s grief that shows the lasting cost of war.

This week's monologue is from The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, a dramatic comedy play by Kristoffer Diaz about a professional wrestler, "driven by narratives of the American dream and neoliberal capitalism." This play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. It was also won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and the New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award. The MBT production is a stand out memory for many audience members as it featured its own elaborate entrance by actor Ansa Akyea via the ceiling in a custom built elevator! Kristoffer Diaz is an American playwright, screenwriter, and educator. He wrote the book for the jukebox musical Hell's Kitchen, for which he received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical as well as the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, with Alicia Keys. He has worked with television networks like HBO, FX, Fox, ESPN, and Netflix. Alex Barreto Hathaway is an actor, director, and designer originally from Puerto Rico. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a thesis in Street Theatre researched while in Brazil. His work centers playfulness as a medicine for division and pain and as the primary tool for creation. As a recipient of the 2019 Arts Midwest We The Many residency and the Blue Sky Center Vecino-a-Vecino residency, he led community arts efforts across the US during the covid pandemic. Now based in Minnesota, he still tries to recreate beach days every Sunday with his partner and two kids.
