[the opening day audience for Prescient Harbingers, Mixed Blood’s trilogy of three plays now playing].

Three plays? One day?

We asked audience members what it’s like seeing three plays in one day.

“It’s kind of crazy. It’s like time flies, and the day is over before you know it, yet time stretches out for the duration of the performances to the point where it seems still. You’re sitting in the moment, this moment, witnessing what you know and can feel is more than just a masterful specimen of stage production—Prescient Harbingers is so here and now that it’s chilling. I could blurt out catch phrases like ‘gun violence,’ ‘white privilege,’ ‘racism,’ and ‘misogyny,’ but simply stating themes doesn’t do these plays justice. They are truly an experience. Your Saturday or Sunday is worth spending at Mixed Blood Theater to see these plays together in rep. Mine certainly was.”

“Black playwrights command the stage in thrilling festival at Mixed Blood. It arrived without fanfare but qualifies as one of the season’s most exciting and engaging offerings. Prescient Harbingers, a three-play festival dreamed up by Mixed Blood Theatre artistic
director Jack Reuler, had its marathon opening Saturday in Minneapolis.

In seven-plus hours of provocative, muscular theater, these hip, smart and hyper-contemporary plays wrestle urgently with themes including workplace violence, police killings of unarmed black men, and cultural authenticity and appropriation.”

“Taken together, ‘Prescient Harbingers’ is a rangy, provocative, scrupulously observed and highly accessible pageant that uses humor, hip-hop and harrowing circumstance to etch a grim-but-compelling perspective on the state of America. It’s worth the time and effort.”
